A Level Maths Year 1 ยท Overview of the whole topic

Level 3 · Ages 16–17
1 The Big Idea

Trigonometry starts as the study of triangles and grows into the study of anything that repeats: tides, sound waves, a big wheel, alternating current. In Year 1 you make that jump โ€” from "opposite over hypotenuse" to functions defined for every angle.

The key idea is the unit circle: the point at angle $\theta$ on a circle of radius $1$ is $(\cos\theta, \sin\theta)$. That single definition gives the graphs, their symmetries, both identities and the method for solving every equation.
What is new compared with GCSE
The ambiguous case of the sine rule · area $= \tfrac12 ab\sin C$ in harder problems
sin, cos and tan for any angle · graphs, symmetry and transformations
$\tan\theta \equiv \dfrac{\sin\theta}{\cos\theta}$ and $\sin^2\theta + \cos^2\theta \equiv 1$ · proving identities · solving equations in an interval
Degrees only in Year 1. Check your calculator is in degree mode before every trig question. Radians, small-angle approximations and the addition formulae come in Year 2. This topic is DfE content area E ยท Trigonometry.
2 The Language You Need
WordMeaningExample
PeriodThe length of one complete cycle of a repeating graph.$y = \sin x$ has period $360ยฐ$
AmplitudeHalf the distance from minimum to maximum.$y = 3\cos x$ has amplitude $3$
AsymptoteA line the graph approaches but never meets.$y = \tan x$ at $x = 90ยฐ$
Principal valueThe single answer a calculator's inverse function gives.$\sin^{-1} 0.5 = 30ยฐ$
Reference angleThe acute angle to the nearest part of the $x$-axis.For $210ยฐ$ it is $30ยฐ$
IdentityTrue for every value of the variable; written $\equiv$.$\sin^2\theta + \cos^2\theta \equiv 1$
Included angleThe angle between two given sides.$C$ in $\tfrac12 ab\sin C$
BearingAngle clockwise from north, three figures.$045ยฐ$ is north-east
$\sin^{-1}x$ is not $\dfrac{1}{\sin x}$. The $-1$ means "inverse function": $\sin^{-1} 0.5$ is the angle whose sine is $0.5$. But $\sin^2 x$ does mean $(\sin x)^2$. The notation is inconsistent; you just have to know it.
3 The Six Core Techniques
1 โ€” The sine rule
$\dfrac{a}{\sin A} = \dfrac{b}{\sin B} = \dfrac{c}{\sin C}$  โ€” check $180ยฐ - \theta$ when finding an angle
2 โ€” The cosine rule and area
$a^2 = b^2 + c^2 - 2bc\cos A$   ·   Area $= \tfrac12 ab\sin C$
3 โ€” Exact values and related angles
Reference angle for the size, CAST or the graph for the sign
4 โ€” Transforming trig graphs
$y = a\sin(bx + c) + d$: amplitude $a$, period $\dfrac{360ยฐ}{b}$
5 โ€” The two identities
$\tan\theta \equiv \dfrac{\sin\theta}{\cos\theta}$     $\sin^2\theta + \cos^2\theta \equiv 1$
6 โ€” Solving equations
Principal value โ†’ second value from symmetry โ†’ add or subtract the period โ†’ check the interval
Worked Example โ€” Several techniques in one question

In triangle $ABC$, $AB = 5$ cm, $AC = 8$ cm and the area is $10\sqrt3$ cm$^2$. Find the two possible sizes of angle $A$, and the length $BC$ in the case where $A$ is obtuse.

โ‘ Area: $\tfrac12(5)(8)\sin A = 10\sqrt3 \;\Rightarrow\; \sin A = \dfrac{\sqrt3}{2}$.
โ‘กSolving the equation for $0ยฐ < A < 180ยฐ$: $A = 60ยฐ$ or $A = 180ยฐ - 60ยฐ = 120ยฐ$.
โ‘ขObtuse case, cosine rule: $BC^2 = 25 + 64 - 2(5)(8)\cos 120ยฐ = 89 - 80\left(-\tfrac12\right) = 129$.
โ‘ฃ$BC = \sqrt{129} \approx 11.4$ cm.
This uses the area formula, an exact value, the symmetry $\sin(180ยฐ - \theta) = \sin\theta$ and the cosine rule. Questions that join two or three subtopics like this are the norm.

5 Common Mistakes to Avoid
Calculator in the wrong mode. $\sin 30 = -0.988$ means you are in radians. In Year 1, always degrees.
Stopping at the calculator's answer. $\sin x = 0.5$ has two solutions between $0ยฐ$ and $360ยฐ$, not one. The same applies to angles found with the sine rule.
Forgetting to transform the interval. For $\sin 2x = k$ with $0ยฐ \leqslant x \leqslant 360ยฐ$, you need every solution with $0ยฐ \leqslant 2x \leqslant 720ยฐ$.
Cancelling a trig function. Dividing $\sin x\cos x = \sin x$ by $\sin x$ throws away all the solutions of $\sin x = 0$. Factorise instead.
Proving an identity by treating it as an equation. Work from one side to the other, using $\equiv$. Do not "do the same to both sides".

7 Practice Questions

Ten questions drawing on the whole Trigonometry topic. Work each one through before opening the solution.

Question 1

Write down the exact value of $\cos 210ยฐ$.

โ–ถ Show solution

$210ยฐ = 180ยฐ + 30ยฐ$, third quadrant, where cos is negative.

$\cos 210ยฐ = -\cos 30ยฐ = -\dfrac{\sqrt3}{2}$

Question 2

In triangle $ABC$, $A = 30ยฐ$, $B = 45ยฐ$ and $a = 10$ cm. Find the exact length of $b$.

โ–ถ Show solution

$b = \dfrac{10\sin 45ยฐ}{\sin 30ยฐ} = \dfrac{10 \times \frac{\sqrt2}{2}}{\frac12} = 10\sqrt2$ cm.

Question 3

In this question you must show detailed reasoning. A triangle has sides $7$, $8$ and $13$. Find its largest angle.

โ–ถ Show solution

$\cos\theta = \dfrac{49 + 64 - 169}{2(7)(8)} = \dfrac{-56}{112} = -\dfrac12$

$\theta = 120ยฐ$.

Question 4

Find the area of a triangle with sides $6$ cm and $10$ cm and included angle $150ยฐ$.

โ–ถ Show solution

$\tfrac12(6)(10)\sin 150ยฐ = 30 \times \tfrac12 = 15$ cm$^2$.

Question 5

State the period of $y = \cos 4x$ and the coordinates of its first minimum point for $x > 0$.

โ–ถ Show solution

Period $\dfrac{360ยฐ}{4} = 90ยฐ$.

$\cos u$ has its first minimum at $u = 180ยฐ$, so $4x = 180ยฐ$, giving $(45ยฐ, -1)$.

Question 6

Given that $\sin\theta = \tfrac13$ and $\theta$ is acute, find the exact values of $\cos\theta$ and $\tan\theta$.

โ–ถ Show solution

$\cos^2\theta = 1 - \tfrac19 = \tfrac89$; acute so $\cos\theta = \dfrac{\sqrt8}{3} = \dfrac{2\sqrt2}{3}$.

$\tan\theta = \dfrac{1/3}{2\sqrt2/3} = \dfrac{1}{2\sqrt2} = \dfrac{\sqrt2}{4}$.

Question 7

Prove that $\cos^2\theta - \sin^2\theta \equiv 2\cos^2\theta - 1$.

โ–ถ Show solution

LHS $\equiv \cos^2\theta - (1 - \cos^2\theta)$

$\equiv 2\cos^2\theta - 1 \equiv$ RHS  โ–

Question 8

Solve $4\sin x = 3\cos x$ for $0ยฐ \leqslant x \leqslant 360ยฐ$.

โ–ถ Show solution

$\tan x = \tfrac34$, so $x = 36.9ยฐ$ or $36.87ยฐ + 180ยฐ = 216.9ยฐ$.

Question 9

Solve $2\sin^2 x = 1 + \cos x$ for $0ยฐ \leqslant x \leqslant 360ยฐ$.

โ–ถ Show solution

$2(1 - \cos^2 x) = 1 + \cos x \;\Rightarrow\; 2\cos^2 x + \cos x - 1 = 0$

$(2\cos x - 1)(\cos x + 1) = 0$

$\cos x = \tfrac12$: $x = 60ยฐ, 300ยฐ$.  $\cos x = -1$: $x = 180ยฐ$.

$x = 60ยฐ, 180ยฐ, 300ยฐ$

Question 10

A triangular field $ABC$ has $AB = 50$ m, $BC = 70$ m and $\angle ABC = 60ยฐ$.

(a) Show that $AC = 10\sqrt{39}$ m.   (b) Find the exact area of the field.   (c) Find $\angle BAC$.   (d) A straight path runs from $B$ to the nearest point of $AC$. Find its length.

โ–ถ Show solution

(a) $AC^2 = 50^2 + 70^2 - 2(50)(70)\cos 60ยฐ = 2500 + 4900 - 3500 = 3900$

$AC = \sqrt{3900} = \sqrt{100 \times 39} = 10\sqrt{39}$ m  โ–

(b) Area $= \tfrac12(50)(70)\sin 60ยฐ = 1750 \times \tfrac{\sqrt3}{2} = 875\sqrt3$ m$^2$ ($\approx 1520$ m$^2$).

(c) $\cos\angle BAC = \dfrac{50^2 + 3900 - 70^2}{2(50)(10\sqrt{39})} = \dfrac{1500}{1000\sqrt{39}} = 0.2402\ldots$

$\angle BAC = 76.1ยฐ$ (1 d.p.)

(d) The path is the perpendicular height $h$ from $B$ to $AC$. Area $= \tfrac12 \times AC \times h$:

$h = \dfrac{2 \times 875\sqrt3}{10\sqrt{39}} = \dfrac{175\sqrt3}{\sqrt{39}} = \dfrac{175}{\sqrt{13}} \approx 48.5$ m.
